L’Orto Rampante: Integrated Solar Shading for a Renzo Piano Building Workshop Project

Nestled in the hills of Alassio, L’Orto Rampante, designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW), restores the historic terraced agricultural landscape surrounding Villa Levi while expanding the Villa della Pergola estate with a series of greenhouses dedicated to hospitality, agriculture, cultural activities and education.

Within this context, Resstende developed a fully integrated solar shading system, designed in close collaboration with the RPBW team to deliver outstanding technical performance, visual continuity and seamless integration with the greenhouses’ glazed architecture.

The first phase of the project included the design, supply and installation of the external solar shading systems for the hospitality greenhouses, while the installation of the internal shading systems is currently underway. The masterplan will continue in 2027 with the installation of shading systems for the restaurant greenhouse, the Levi Space and the educational facilities.

The entire system was developed as a bespoke solution. Alongside the Boston 110 and Dallas shading systems, Resstende engineered dedicated stainless-steel brackets, custom fixing systems and tailor-made headboxes specifically designed to integrate with the greenhouses’ steel structure while preserving the architectural language of the project. Every detail was engineered to ensure long-term reliability, durability and ease of maintenance in an environment exposed to severe weather conditions and the corrosive effects of the marine atmosphere.

Installation required particularly complex site management due to the steep terraced landscape and restricted site access. All components were transported using small vehicles to designated collection points before being lifted by crane to the various levels of the complex. Final installation was carried out manually, with on-site inspections and continuous coordination with the design team to ensure the highest level of precision throughout the construction process.
